Madiambal Diagne, a Senegalese Media mogul, is Partially Granted Extradition by a French Court
Madiambal Diagne, a well-known Senegalese media owner and outspoken opponent of his nation’s administration, was granted extradition after a French Court of Appeal rendered a “partially favorable” decision.
In September, Diagne was the subject of an international arrest warrant issued by Senegal on charges of financial malfeasance, including money laundering and fraud connected to governmental contracts. Diagne fled Senegal for France after receiving the summons, professing faith in the French legal system and judges.
In a statement, Diagne stressed that the French judiciary, not the French government, made the judgment and stated that all legal options will be explored prior to any final evaluation. “I came to France because I have faith in the French judiciary, and we live in a state that upholds the rule of law,” he stated.
Diagne’s legal team, however, vigorously disputes the charges made by Senegalese authorities. Vincent Brengarth, his attorney, stated that it is “hard to believe” the decision was rendered without Senegal’s influence, pointing out that the nation had threatened to revoke reciprocity if Diagne and other citizens were not turned over.
