Uganda: Kizza Besigye, an Opposition Activist, was Refused Bail
Ugandan opposition leader Kizza Besigye has been denied bail by the nation’s high court more than a year after his arrest. Due to allegations that he intended to use force to remove Yoweri Museveni, the nation’s longtime president, Besigye has been charged with treason.
He referred to the accusations against him as persecution at a court appearance on Tuesday. This is actually a persecution rather than a prosecution; it feels like the prosecutors and persecutors I have been dealing with for the past 20 years are trying me.” I’ve been accused of treason. I’m not sure how many times I’ve been accused of treason treason that has never been put on trial. Besigye protested, “I am sick of this persecution.
Since going missing in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, in November of last year, the 68-year-old has been detained. He and other opposition leaders in Uganda, including Sarah Bireete, Executive Director of the Center for Constitutional Governance, are being unjustly denied bail, according to some legal experts.
According to Bireete, “the state will argue that those who are incarcerated have cases to answer, but they cannot explain why opposition leaders in Uganda can no longer access bail from court on eligible offences even when they meet the other prerequisites for bail as provided in our judicial guidelines.
