Despite Conflict in Sudan’s west Darfur, Hundreds of Youngsters Escape to the Tawila Camp

Tawila refugee camp in Sudan has turned into a fragile sanctuary for hundreds of children separated from their families while fleeing the escalating conflict in West Darfur. The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) reported that more than 400 unaccompanied minors have arrived at the camp in just the past month.

Mathilde Vu, the NRC’s advocacy manager, described the conditions as dire and deeply distressing. “We see children caring for other children because their parents have disappeared or been detained. This is not safety,” she said, adding that the sense of calm in the camp is “extremely fragile.

The influx of displaced families follows a violent offensive in El-Fasher, where the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) attacked what was once the Sudanese army’s last stronghold in Darfur, leaving hundreds dead. The ongoing power struggle between the RSF and government forces since 2023 has devastated local communities and forced thousands to seek refuge in overcrowded camps like Tawila.

According to Vu, children face the worst of the humanitarian crisis. “Many of them have been starving for 18 months, lost their homes and loved ones, and endured a deadly journey to reach safety,” she said. “That’s why education during emergencies is crucial—it brings hope and stability amid chaos.
