As The Election Draws Closer, Guinea-Bissau’s President Fires the Prime Minister

In the most recent action to set up President Umaro Sissoco Embalo for a probable second term in November elections, the West African nation’s president dismissed the prime minister and named his replacement on Thursday.

Rui Duarte de Barros, who had been prime minister since December 2023, was replaced by Braima Camara, a former coordinator of the Madem G15 opposition party, in accordance with a presidential order.

Before the general elections in November, there has been a great deal of debate around Embalo’s tenure. More than 50 years after separating from Portugal, the tiny West African country has seen many coups.

According to Guinea-Bissau’s constitution, the president can serve for a maximum of two terms, each lasting five years. Although the country’s Supreme Court has decided that Embalo’s tenure should continue until September 4, the opposition claims that it should have ended on February 27. Tensions were raised, meanwhile, when Embalo said earlier this year that his first term would continue until the election date of November 30.

The opposition has been refusing to acknowledge Embalo as president for the past few months. Following what it said were threats of deportation from Embalo, a team that ECOWAS had dispatched to Guinea-Bissau in March to assist in resolving the conflict quickly departed.
