Sudanese Refugees Battle to Survive in the Korsi Camp

The Korsi Refugee Camp, in the Vakaga region of the eastern Central African Republic, is home to over 18,000 refugees and returnees who are escaping the ongoing turmoil in Sudan. This information comes from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).

The Vakaga region, which is close to Sudan’s border, has grown to be a vital haven for people fleeing violence. Many of these individuals have had traumatic experiences and have been subjected to abuse, including sexual violence.

Together with its partners, UNFPA offers sexual and reproductive health (SRH) and gender-based violence (GBV) services at a neighbouring health facility in Birao, as well as vital GBV services in the camp.

The clinic offers a variety of medical treatments, such as GBV case management, maternity and reproductive health care, including emergency obstetric care, and psychosocial support to aid in the healing process for rape survivors.

The clinic is supported by UNFPA, which also provides medical equipment and supplies and pays the wages of a nurse and midwife. Compared to more remote camps, the camp’s close proximity to the city of Birao facilitates residents’ integration with the host community.
