Scientists Claim that Devastating Flooding in Africa has Gotten Worse due to Climate Change

Climate change brought on by humans A group of international experts claimed in a research released on Wednesday that this year’s deadly floods was caused by an increase in the intensity of seasonal rains throughout the Niger and Lake Chad basins.

Floods in Chad, Cameroon, Niger, Nigeria, and Sudan have killed over 2,000 people and uprooted millions more, according to researchers at the World Weather Attribution (WWA) effort. Dams in Sudan and Nigeria were also overrun by the rains.

The WWA discovered that the rains in Niger and the Lake Chad basins, which border four of the five nations, were five to twenty percent more intense this year.

According to scientists, these periods of heavy summer precipitation have become the new normal due to climate change and, if global warming persists, will happen every year.

They went on to say that poverty, fast urbanisation, and problems with water management have all contributed to the effects of these more frequent catastrophic floods.

Millions of people have been displaced by fighting in Chad, Nigeria, and Sudan, living in makeshift shelters and at increased danger of floods due to heavy rainfall. According to the group, the already fragile area was severely affected by the June–September flooding, further exacerbating Sudan’s already complicated humanitarian situation.
