The Author is on Trial in France for Denying the Genocide in Rwanda

In Paris, a French-Cameroonian writer is on trial for allegedly denying the 1994 Rwandan massacre.

Charles Onana calls the claim that the Rwandan government at the time planned a genocide “a scam” in his 2019 book. Onana and his publisher are both on trial.

According to Onana, his book does not refute the existence of genocide or the targeting of Tutsis. Denying or “minimising” the existence of any genocide that France has formally recognised is illegal under French law.

The Human Rights League (LDH), the Rwandan Community of France (CRF), and the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) presented the case before the court. Onana’s work, according to the complainants, is revisionist and attempts to minimise a crime against humanity.
Onana’s work on the genocide in Rwanda has generated criticism before.

‘The Secrets of the Rwandan Genocide’, a book he penned in 2002, infuriated Rwandan President Paul Kagame. Because of the book, Onana’s co-author, a Rwandan national, was imprisoned in Kigali for life. Approximately 800,000 moderate Hutus and Tutsis perished in the Rwandan genocide.
