UNGA: Senegalese Leader Criticizes “Inertia” of Security Council in Response to Sahelian Destabilization
Senegalese Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye criticized the Security Council for its passivity in the face of the Sahelian destabilization and killings.
On Wednesday, September 25, the president spoke to the UN General Assembly.
“We cannot tolerate the Sahel turning into a battleground for rival foreign powers, whose conflicts only serve to deepen the instability of the area,” Faye declared.
It is important to remember that global peace and African security are inextricably linked. The Security Council must perform its responsibility as a guarantor of global stability to the fullest.
Malian authorities criticized remarks made by Ukrainian officials in August of last year, claiming that Kyiv was involved in separatist rebel actions in Tinzawaten, northern Mali.
Following military takeovers in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger in recent years, the majority of Western governments were instructed to withdraw their troops from Sahel states due to the growing threat posed by jihadis.
During his ten-minute address, the president also demanded a stop to unfair economic practices that impede the development of the Global South and a truce in Gaza.
Notably, he made reference to “illegal commerce and tax evasion.”
The 44-year-old leader further demanded that Africa be fairly represented in multinational institutions’ governing bodies.
