The winner of Sri Lanka’s Presidential Election is Marxist Dissanayake
According to data made public by the Election Commission on Sunday, Marxist lawmaker Anura Kumara Dissanayake has emerged victorious in Sri Lanka’s presidential contest. Voters have rejected the establishment political establishment, which has been widely charged with driving the country into economic collapse.
Dissanayake defeated incumbent liberal President Ranil Wickremesinghe, who assumed office two years ago after the country’s economy collapsed, and opposition leader Sajith Premadasa thanks to his pro-working class and anti-political elite campaigning, which made him popular among young people.
According to Election Commission figures, Dissanayake received 5,740,179 votes, whereas Premadasa received 4,530,902 votes.
The election was dominated by the state of the economy, with many voters finding it difficult to make ends meet following the severe spending cuts imposed by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) during the nation’s economic crisis in 2022. We are all part of this victory,” Dissanayake wrote in a post on X.
