The Ruling Party of Mozambique Demands Communication while the opposition denies the Outcome of the Vote
Following a difficult election, Mozambique is still tense. Rallygoers for opposition candidate Venancio Mondlane have been protesting the outcome of the presidential election, which saw Daniel Chapo of the ruling party win.
As soon as the National Election Commission announced that Chapo had won the election, protests broke out. Mondlane, with just over 20%, finished in second.
The demonstrators set tires on fire and obstructed roadways. Police used tear gas in response.
Supported by the Podemos party, Mondlane asserts that he won the vote and has charged the ruling FRELIMO party and electoral officials with manipulation and fraud.
Following the murders of two opposition leaders near Mondlane, tensions in the southern African nation were already high before the election commission’s announcement. Police have arrested hundreds of protesters and injured many more. After a tumultuous election, Mozambique is still tense.
