The AU Warns of a Threat to Unity and Denounces Sudan’s Parallel Administration

Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) announcement of a parallel administration was rejected by the African Union’s Peace and Security Council (PSC), which warned that it jeopardizes Sudan’s unity.
The PSC advised AU members and the international community not to recognize or support any such institution after its meeting in Addis Ababa on March 11. This follows criticism of the RSF and 18 affiliated movements’ announcement of a “peace and unity” administration in Nairobi. Kenya changed its position after first supporting its participation.
Since April 2023, the continuous fighting has killed thousands of people and displaced millions more. The AU reiterated its support to Sudan’s sovereignty and called for peaceful negotiations. After long-simmering tensions between its military and paramilitary rebels erupted in the capital, Khartoum, and extended to other areas, Sudan plunged into a fatal conflict in mid-April 2023.
The United Nations reports that the war has killed over 24,000 people and displaced over 14 million people, or around 30% of the population. It is projected that 3.2 million Sudanese have fled to nearby nations.
