Tanzania Verifies a Marburg Virus Case

Samia Suluhu Hassan, the president of Tanzania, declared that a sample taken from a remote area of the nation had tested positive for Marburg disease. One patient was found to have a Marburg virus infection following laboratory testing at Kabaile Mobile Laboratory in Kagera, which was subsequently verified in Dar es Salaam. Thankfully, tests for other ailments did not reveal any symptoms in the remaining suspected patients, Hassan said.

This verified case of Marburg virus represents our nation’s second Marburg virus disease outbreak. The initial outbreak happened in the same Kagera region in March 2023, as you may remember,” she said. Twenty-five further samples came out negative. Days after the nation’s health minister declared that there were no cases of the illness in the nation, the statement was made.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the director-general of the WHO, stated that he did not yet see any reason for concern.

“Considering the low global risk and the strong capabilities of the Tanzanian government, WHO advises against restrictions on trade and travel to the country and as Her Excellency said, Tanzania is open for business. The Marburg virus is a highly contagious illness that, in most cases, is lethal if left untreated.
