South Africa, UK sign Bilateral Agreements, agree to bolster Trade and Defence Ties

David Lammy, the foreign secretary of the United Kingdom, and his South African colleague signed bilateral agreements in Cape Town.

The goal of his discussions with Ronald Lamola was to strengthen the two countries’ relationship, as they have decided to increase their defence and commerce cooperation.

During meetings, Lammy reiterated his stance on African representation at the UN, stating, ”the U.K. has had a longstanding position that Africa must be represented on the U.N. Security Council and I’m keen to better understand if the recent position is supported by other members of the Security Council, particularly Russia and China.

Ronald Lamola, for his part, maintained that South Africa views the UK as a crucial ally.

Lamola stated in his introductory remarks that he wanted to recognise the “close bonds of friendship” that exist between the two nations and their citizens. However, he acknowledged that there was still opportunity for progress, noting that the pandemic had contributed to a little stall in international investment and commerce.
