South Africa Sends Military as Anti-Migrant Riots Grow
South Africa has deployed more than 3,000 soldiers around the country to reinforce security as anti-migrant protests escalate, with organisers threatening to stage demonstrations every week. President Cyril Ramaphosa approved the military deployment, which started at the end of June and will assist police in dealing with any disturbances.
Thousands marched across major cities earlier this week, with some protests becoming violent as shops were ransacked and confrontations broke out. More than 900 persons were arrested for charges ranging from immigration infractions to public violence and robbery.
The protests come after months of animosity that has driven many migrants from their homes and places of business. Protest organisers say they are demanding stronger action against undocumented migrants, while rights groups believe the campaign is fostering fear and violence against foreign nationals.
