In Their First Raid Since the IS leader’s Death, Nigerian Terrorists Kill Three Soldiers

According to security officials and a local resident who spoke to AFP on Friday, Islamic State-affiliated jihadists in northeastern Nigeria murdered three soldiers in their first attack on a military camp after the death of an IS deputy head in the area. Since 2009, Boko Haram and its rival Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) have been involved in an Islamist insurgency in the northeast.

Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, an IS second-in-command known as the “most active terrorist” in the world, was killed last month by US and Nigerian soldiers in a remote village in the northeast of Africa’s most populous nation. Shortly after Al-Minuki’s killing, intelligence sources told AFP they were worried about an increase in ISWAP assaults on military installations as retaliation.

According to local and intelligence sources, ISWAP rebels overran a base in the town of Gajiganna late on Wednesday, 50 kilometers (31 miles) from Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state, and drove out soldiers during a fierce gunfight. According to Ibrahim Liman, an anti-jihadist militia member supporting the military, “three soldiers were killed in the attack by ISWAP terrorists who carted away weapons and burned down the base.
