A shelter in Madrid Gets Ready for the Papal Visit
The center is open around-the-clock and provides basic services, psychiatric support, social counsel, and a place to sleep for individuals in need. Recently arrived immigrants, such as Constantina Nchama from Equatorial Guinea, who was evicted from her rented residence after her residency application was denied, are among its many inhabitants.
As part of Spain’s “extraordinary regularization” program for foreigners living in the country without authorization, the 33-year-old mother of two who was taken in by Cáritas is hoping to get her documentation in order. She has subsequently studied to become a flight attendant.”Coming here is truly something that makes me say wow for those of us who are immigrants and find ourselves in this situation of having family far away, someone like the Pope, who is an important figure for the entire world,” Nchama remarked. “It’s something that happens once in a lifetime.”
Elmerán, a Peruvian, also ended up homeless and required multiple surgeries in recent years because of health problems. He welcomed the pontiff’s arrival with open arms and claimed that his faith provided him the strength to overcome life’s obstacles.
