Kenya’s President Ruto Is Willing To Talk With Young People Who Are Demonstrating

President William Ruto has stated that he is open to have discussions with the young people in Kenya who are demonstrating against the financial bill.

Young activists in Nairobi set out on Sunday, June 23, to stop politicians who back the bill from addressing congregations and sharing their concerns.

The public budget measure, which proposes increased taxes, is the target of ongoing youth protests. Thousands nationwide staged protests last week to call for its repeal.

Human rights organizations report that at least 200 protestors were hurt and that two young people died. About twenty young people gathered on June 23 at Nairobi’s Holy Family Basilica. Student Kanana Koome issued a statement denouncing the onerous taxes and advising Christians to carefully review the measure.

President Ruto attended a Sunday church in Nyahururu, 200 kilometers north of Nairobi, and made his first statement regarding the protests: “We will dialogue with you to identify your issues and work together as a nation.”

There have been calls from protestors for fresh mobilizations for next Tuesday and Thursday.
