As the Blogger’s Death is Being investigated, Kenya’s Deputy Police Chief Resigns

As enquiries into the death of a blogger while in detention continue, Kenya’s deputy police commander resigned on Monday. Days of demonstrations were held in Nairobi following the murder of Albert Ojwang, who was charged with slandering Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat. Property was destroyed and many protesters were hurt.

Lagat announced his resignation on Monday “given the ongoing investigations” into Ojwang’s death. The fact that he was the complainant was not acknowledged by him. In a statement, Lagat stated, “I agree to offer any assistance that may be needed during the investigations of the regrettable incident.

Inspector General Douglas Kanja, Langat’s chief, previously stated that once Langat lodged a formal complaint, enquiries into Ojwang’s internet activity began.

On June 6, Ojwang was taken into custody in western Kenya and brought to Nairobi, a distance of 400 kilometres (248 miles), for posting what the police claimed was “false information” on social media.

Two days later, he was discovered dead at the Central authorities Station. According to the authorities, he died from “hitting his head against the cell wall.” A pathology report contradicted the police story. According to the report, the dead had “other injuries spread all over the body that are pointing towards assault, as well as a head injury and neck compression.
