This Generation is Something to be Proud of: Madagascar’s Youth Persist in Their Protests

The Gen Z demonstrators in Madascar remain steadfast in their demands for reform and President Andry Rajoelina’s resignation. On Friday, however, the head of state stated that he would not step down and instead asserted that elements were seeking to topple the administration. They want their freedom of speech to be recognized, a better health system, an end to power outages and ongoing water cuts, and the removal of the president.

As members of Generation Z, artists, businesspeople, and independent contractors have drawn inspiration from recent youth demonstrations for improved living circumstances and against governments perceived as corrupt or dictatorial, such as those in Bangladesh and Nepal.

Annah Rahajason, a student at the music studio that was converted into a protest supply point, stated, “Madagascar is on an island, and we don’t really know what’s going on outside of it. Thankfully, with social media, we know that in fact, we can if we want to, and it’s also thanks to Nepal, which influenced us and in turn Madagascar has inspired others.
