The Proposed Introduction of a New HIV Prevention Vaccine is Praised by South Africa’s Health Minister

While applauding the anticipated introduction of the new HIV-prevention vaccine on Tuesday, South Africa’s health minister cautioned that the initial supply of donated vaccines would be limited.

About half a million people in the nation, which has the highest HIV prevalence rate in the world, would receive the medication, according to Minister Aaron Motsoaledi. If enough patients take the new medication lenacapavir (LEN), which is taken just twice a year, HIV/AIDS might be eradicated in South Africa in 14 to 18 years.

In addition to being effective for other groups, it has been shown to be 100% effective in preventing young women from contracting HIV through conception. More than a quarter of the 400 or so South Africans who still contract the virus every day are teenage girls and young women.

Only a few weeks have passed since the United States announced plans to purchase two million pills of the HIV preventive medication for low-income nations. A $29.2 million grant from the Global Fund and an extra $5 million from the Networking HIV and AIDS Community of Southern Africa will finance the jab’s deployment, which is scheduled to start in April 2026.
