Haitian Medical Students Seek Transfer of a Teaching Hospital in the Capital
On Wednesday, dozens of Haitian medical students marched peacefully from their university to the prime minister’s office in Port-au-Prince, but were stopped by riot police. They are asking that the government relocate and reopen one of the country’s main public hospitals, which is critical for clinical training of new doctors.
The State University Hospital in the city centre has been shuttered since 2024 due to a gang attack. Benjamin Marc Antelhomme, a medical student, stated that this is the third time they have taken to the streets to demand that the government relocate the teaching hospital.Students rely on it for clinical rotations. “All other institutions located in the lower part of the city have already been relocated,” he stated.
Rachel Louis, a fellow medical student, argued that they should not have to protest the institution’s relocation. We should be in the hospital, caring for patients. It’s terrible that when we ask for a hospital, they send people to shoot us,” she remarked. According to local media, a student was shot in the arm by police during Wednesday’s demonstration after previously being tear-gassed.
