England Player Bukayo Saka Gets back together with Colin Nixon, His first Football Coach

To highlight the influence that coaches can have on their communities, England football player Bukayo Saka reconnected with Colin Nixon, his first football coach. When Saka was just six years old, Nixon noticed the winger’s talent for the game and asked him to join Greenford Celtic.

“Nixon was the team manager, and he allowed nine or ten players to come and train every weekend, play games, have fun, and be happy. He took them away from something else that they could have been doing that might not have been good for their lives, for example, me,” Saka explained.

I’m here today because he was one of the individuals who offered me the chance to play football, and I got started after that. I believe that he and other coaches in the area play a significant part in assisting the children of this generation,” the 23-year-old continued. Saka also serves as an ambassador for Chase, a company that seeks to broaden coaching diversity and make coaching credentials more accessible to those from low-income backgrounds.

More than half of respondents to a YouGov study that Chase commissioned stated that having role models from a wider range of backgrounds would increase their chances of advancing in coaching.
