DRC: Residents of Goma Disagree About the M23 Ceasefire Declaration

The M23 insurrection has announced a truce that would go into effect on Thursday, February 3, 2025, as it advances farther into South Kivu after Goma fell. The decision was made in reaction to the deteriorating humanitarian situation, according to the M23.

In Goma, however, opinions are still divided. Some locals applaud the action as a step in the right direction, but others are highly sceptical of its veracity. We are really exhausted, very exhausted,” Goma resident Didier Bahati remarked. “The number of collateral victims is excessive. We seriously mistrust this truce, to be honest.

Others find hope in the announcement. “This ceasefire is very important for us,” remarked another Goma resident, Kabunga Nelson. “It will allow life to return to normal—no more killings and everyone can resume their daily activities.”

Some people aren’t convinced, though. Byamungu Hangi, a motorbike taxi driver, stated, “The war is still going on and people are still suffering despite the ceasefire.” “We hear about a ceasefire but don’t see peace. Many people are waiting to see if the ceasefire will last or if the conflict will continue, and the situation on the ground is very tense.
