Dozens of Demonstrators Criticizing the Government’s Economic Policies are Detained by Ghanaian Police
Dozens of protesters who staged protests in the capital city of Ghana over alleged economic mismanagement by the government have been taken into custody by the police. Additionally, the way the government is managing illicit mining, a practice that damages the environment, had drawn criticism from the crowds.
Police pledged to take harsh action against those who they claimed were attacking cops and accused certain members of the masses of doing so. Before fighting broke out, a police spokesman said that protestors had gathered illegally.
But the group in charge of planning the three-day protest, Democracy Hub, charged that police were staging an assault on nonviolent demonstrators. “We’ve communicated with our lawyers to deal with what the police have decided to do today,” stated Democracy Hub convenor Oliver Barker Vormawor. Everyone is being called upon. Random arrests are what they intend to do.
The country’s financial predicament is likely on the minds of many voters as the demonstrations take place ahead of Ghana’s December presidential election. After a significant financial catastrophe in 2022 that saw inflation skyrocketing to 54% of GDP, the nation is now progressively recovering.
