Backlash Against the Chagos Deal: UK Under Pressure for £30 Billion Payout

There is still tension in the UK as a result of the Chagos Island deal, as some politicians are wondering why the government agreed to give the island to Mauritius. It has come to light that the agreement would finance broad tax reductions in Mauritius. The U.K. will lease back the base to Mauritius for a minimum of 99 years in exchange for an average annual payment of $136 million.
We learnt this morning that Mauritius is doing away with income tax due to its disastrous Chagos Deal. Why in the world should the British taxpayer foot the tab for Mauritius’ tax cuts? Questioned UK Opposition Leader Kemi Badenoch. Since the agreement with Mauritius does not protect the rights of the Chagossian people, the UN has called on the UK to renegotiate it.
According to a UN statement, the deal seems to be in conflict with the Chagossians’ right to return because it keeps the United States and the United Kingdom’s foreign military presence on Diego Garcia and prevents the Chagossians from returning.
