At the Special Olympics Winter Games, African Countries Excel

The Special Olympics World Winter Games in Turin will conclude on Saturday after a thrilling week of competitions and festivities. The Games included two closing ceremonies in Turin and Sestriere and final medal competitions.
African countries have advanced significantly at the Winter Games this year. Senegal participated in the Games for the first time with eight athletes. Namibia’s floorball team made an impression with its advancements on the international scene, while South Africa sent a formidable team of six athletes to compete in figure skating and short-track speed skating.
Jamaica left its mark among the triumph of African athletes. Nigel Davies of Special Olympics Jamaica expressed his pride in their journey: They had previously learned how to rollerblade, and they were taught how to balance on the inline rollerblades.” Thus, they became ice skaters in this way. Seeing them put in their best effort and win the gold, silver, and bronze makes me proud of them. The accomplishments of competitors from Africa and beyond at the end of the Games demonstrate these countries’ increasing success in winter sports.
