As The Nation Attempts To Put An End To Political Upheaval, Haiti Installs A New Administration
The ceremonial inauguration of Haiti’s new cabinet on Wednesday is the last stage in reassembling the government that will manage a nation under gang siege.
Prime Minister Garry Conille emphasized in his speech the necessity of stepping up security in the nation, which is experiencing gang violence.
He also discussed the nation’s current humanitarian catastrophe.
“My fellow countrymen, Haiti is dealing with serious issues. Our daily lives are being paralyzed by security and violence. The pain of our most vulnerable residents is being exacerbated by the humanitarian situation.”
At least 80% of Port-au-Prince’s capital is under the hands of gangs.
Haiti is getting ready for the expected arrival in the next few weeks of a Kenyan police force, which is being supported by the U.N.
Conille also requested a moment of quiet in honor of the three police officers who were slain by gangs the Sunday before.
Ariel Henry, the previous prime minister, resigned in April after weeks of organized gang attacks, and his cabinet was disbanded. The main international airport in Haiti was closed for over three months when gunmen took control of police stations, invaded Haiti’s two largest prisons, and opened fire on them.
