An Israeli Minister’s Video Showing Flotilla Activists on their Knees Sparks Criticism
International outcry followed the release of a video by Israel’s far-right national security minister on Wednesday that showed jailed activists from a flotilla headed for Gaza kneeling with their wrists tied and foreheads on the ground.
Itamar Ben Gvir, a firebrand minister, posted the video on X after Israeli police detained hundreds of international protestors at the southern port of Ashdod after intercepting the flotilla’s ships at sea. Ben Gvir was criticized by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Foreign Minister Gideon Saar after the video caused an immediate international controversy.
The video, which has the caption “Welcome to Israel,” depicts scores of protestors being made to kneel with their foreheads on the ground and their wrists bound. The Israeli national anthem occasionally plays in the background.
Ben Gvir is also seen in the video heckling and waving an Israeli flag amid the protestors who are being held. Netanyahu became enraged with Ben Gvir, claiming that the minister’s actions with the activists were “not in line with Israel’s values and norms” and threatening to deport them “as soon as possible”
