After his Visa Expires, François Compaoré is Unable to Travel from Ivory Coast to France
According to a report from Jeune Afrique, François Compaoré has been stranded in Ivory Coast for several weeks. He had come to the nation to see his sick brother, former Burkina Faso president Blaise Compaoré, who lives in exile in Abidjan. But since his visa expired, he has been unable to go back to France. Compaoré has spent the last eight years in France and has Ivorian ancestry. However, he has not renewed his visa with the French government in Abidjan.
François-Henri Briard of the Paris law firm Briard is the 70-year-old’s attorney. Compaoré appealed to a French court in November in the hopes that they would allow him to return, but his request was denied. Compaoré had presented many defenses, according to Jeune Afrique’s report.
He said that to assist with his son’s care, he had to return to France. He said that his wife couldn’t handle his condition alone and that he needed to “accompany him, ensure his medical follow-up, well-being, and personal development. Compaoré added that he needs an operation that was scheduled prior to his departure from France.
In the meantime, the judge contended that Compaoré had not shown any supporting documentation for his assertions. In an effort to get Compaoré back to France, his team is preparing to make another appeal.
