Egypt and Qatar’s United Initiative to Negotiate a Ceasefire in Gaza

On Wednesday, Egypt’s foreign minister declared that the two nations are working together to create a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip that would allow relief to be delivered to the Palestinian region that is severely affected. Badr Abdelatty gave this declaration after talks in Cairo with Mohamed Ali Nafti, the foreign minister of Tunisia.

“Absolutely, at the center of the Arab cause was, particularly, the Palestinian cause and the terrible conditions in the Gaza Strip and the attempts made by Egypt in partnership with sisterly Qatar to swiftly reach an agreement stipulating an immediate halt of the Israeli aggression, a ceasefire, and full and unreserved access to aid to the Gaza Strip,” said he.

Over 45,000 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli airstrikes and ground operations, with over half of them being women and children, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry.

In its statistics, the ministry does not distinguish between combatants and civilians. Hundreds of thousands of people are crowded into tent camps along the coast as winter brings cold and rainy weather.

There are shortages of blankets, warm clothes, and firewood, and aid agencies are having trouble transporting food and supplies. Compared to roughly 70 trucks per day in October and November, Israel has tripled the amount of aid entering the region, averaging 130 trucks per day this month.
