AFCON Tensions With Morocco are Dismissed by Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko

Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko on Monday played down recent tensions between Senegal and Morocco following the Africa Cup of Nations, describing them as emotional reactions driven by sport rather than deeper political issues.

Speaking alongside Moroccan Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch during the 15th Morocco–Senegal Joint Commission for Cooperation in Rabat, Sonko said the moment was marked by strong sporting emotions that had led to regrettable incidents on both sides.

He acknowledged that some of the scenes were painful for two nations with close ties, but stressed they should not be exaggerated or misinterpreted. Sonko said these incidents were emotional excesses linked to football passion, not signs of political or cultural division.

Relations between fans became strained after Senegal defeated host nation Morocco 1–0 in the AFCON final on January 18. The meeting in Rabat marked the first Joint Commission between the two countries in 12 years. Sonko noted that the dates had been agreed in December, but said the timing offered a useful opportunity to calm tensions and reinforce cooperation.
