Israelis Express Skepticism Over the US-Backed Peace Proposal for Gaza
Israelis are skeptical of a US-backed proposal to remove Israeli forces from Gaza only after Hamas has completely disarmed. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected crucial elements of the plan on Sunday, maintaining that Israel’s military “will not carry out any withdrawal until Hamas is genuinely disarmed,” even as talks with Washington continue.
Shlomo Margalit, resident of Kibbutz Nir Oz: “I don’t want to give any likelihood to what happened on 7th of October will recur itself. On the other hand, there is a little chance, so we must devise a way to give it a chance, to see what’s going on, to put our hand on every small step that they (Hamas) are doing, to make sure that’s in our benefit and be optimistic.”
Bruce Schonefeld, Tel Aviv. Resident: “It seems lovely, but it is a joke. Because I believe the United States, President Trump, needs someone to say – ‘Look, I brought calm to Gaza’ – but it’s evident that Hamas will not disarm, and if Hamas does not disarm, Israel will not walk away So, there will be no truce until Hamas leaves Gaza.”
