The Final Migrant Shore Camp in Ceuta has been Cleared by Spanish Police in Anticipation of the King’s Visit

The final migrant camp on a seashore in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, North Africa, was cleared by Spanish police on Sunday in anticipation of the king’s visit. It emerged as a result of a significant influx of over 70,000 individuals from neighbouring Morocco into the territory at the end of July.

A political crisis in Madrid was precipitated by the sudden influx, which resulted in the deaths of numerous individuals and sparked alarm throughout the European Union. Although the majority of individuals returned within a few days, thousands have remained in the territory and have been sleeping in the street or on beaches.

Approximately 3,000 individuals were residing in El Trampolin, where police and soldiers arrived shortly after 8 a.m. on Sunday morning. They loaded migrants onto buses to be transported to reception centers for processing; however, some individuals fled into the nearby hills in order to evade them.

Then, cleaning crews arrived to disassemble the makeshift tents and clean the shore and esplanade. Spain has been criticised for its tardiness in addressing the situation that has resulted in tensions within the region. On Tuesday, King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia are scheduled to visit Ceuta, followed by Melilla. This will be the first visit to the territories by a Spanish monarch since 2007.
