Senegal’s Former President, Abdoulaye Wade, Turns 100
Even though he controversially left office after trying to earn a third term, former Senegalese President Abdoulaye Wade, who is now in his 100s, is still regarded as a political figure in Senegal. Under the direction of Head of State Bassirou Diomaye Faye, Senegal is reliving the story of its former leader this week. Among his accomplishments is a conference that will take place at the Grand Théâtre de Dakar on Thursday and Friday.
A widespread tribute to “Gorgui” (the old man, in the Wolof language), who was officially born on May 29, 1926, in Saint-Louis (north) and led Senegal from 2000 to 2012, has been paid for several days by President Faye, a number of politicians, including opponents of his regime, and anonymous internet users.
Ousmane Sonko, the president of the National Assembly, praised “one of the most illustrious fathers of Senegalese democracy” and said, “Thousands of Senegalese are celebrating him in their hearts,” despite his previous harsh criticism. Recent events in Senegalese politics, including President Faye’s formal break with the party and the dismissal of Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, who has since been elected president of the National Assembly, have not been discussed by Mr. Wade.
