Haitian Prime Minister Believes Gang Control Force is Making an Impact in Port-au-Prince

Just three weeks after a UN-backed gang suppression force arrived in Haiti, the country’s prime minister informed the Security Council that the situation in the capital, Port-au-Prince, had improved.

According to the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, one in every four Haitians live in gang-controlled neighborhoods.Without security, there can be no development. Concrete results are beginning to emerge thanks to the Haitian armed forces, national police, and gang suppression force,” stated Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé.

“Several sections of the capital are gradually being retaken. Economic and social life is slowly but steadily resuming.” Last June, Haiti’s gangs had “near-total control” of the capital, and officials were helpless to stop the escalating carnage. Haitian police claim they currently control 72% of the city.

The new force succeeded a smaller UN-backed mission run by Kenyan police, which was understaffed and underfunded. The UN Special Representative says Haiti is at a watershed moment, emphasizing that “elections remain the only legitimate path back to constitutional order.” Haiti has not had elections since 2016, mainly due to inadequate security.
