Mali’s Military Administration Says Militants have Staged Strikes in Numerous Locations

According to Mali’s junta, armed militants launched simultaneous and coordinated operations across the country, including various factions. On Saturday morning, the army said that it was combating “terrorists” who had stormed the main army barracks in Bamako and other locations.

Explosions and gunshots were heard across the city, especially near the main military camp in Kati, located outside the capital. General Assimi Goïta, the country’s military ruler, gained power after the army deposed President Ibrahim Boubacar in August 2020. The town is his home.

Military officials claimed fighting was still going on and urged civilians to keep calm.No one has taken responsibility for the attacks. For almost a decade, Mali has been fighting insurgencies led by al-Qaeda and Islamic State affiliates in West Africa.

However, it has been battling with a Tuareg-led revolt in the country’s north for much longer. Mali’s military chiefs seized control following coups in 2020 and 2021. They vowed to restore security in a country where terrorists control huge parts in the north and center, frequently attacking the army and people.

The junta, like its predecessors in neighbouring Niger and Burkina Faso, has cut ties with erstwhile colonial power France and several Western countries in order to align itself politically and militarily with Russia.
