US to Eliminate Unique Safeguards for Somali Migrants as Lawsuits Increase

The Trump administration plans to withdraw the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) program for Somalis next week, depriving approximately 1,100 people of their legal right to live and work in the United States.

The US Department of Homeland Security claims that conditions in Somalia have improved enough to justify terminating TPS. However, four Somali nationals and two migrant-rights organizations have filed a complaint, calling the decision illegal and questioning how it was made.

In the United States, the legal advocacy group Muslim Advocates argues eliminating protection for Somali migrants is “racism disguised as immigration policy.” The plaintiffs believe that the action is unlawful because it is motivated by bias rather than an objective evaluation of the situation on the ground in Somalia, where combat continues between government forces and Al-Shabaab insurgents.

The complaint also recalls a series of remarks by President Trump, who has often ridiculed Somalis, apparently referring to them as “trash and low-IQ people.” In December 2025, he stated that he intended to deport them “back to where they came from.
