Mexico is Getting Ready for a Wave of Violence After the Army Kills Cartel Leader “El Mencho
The army’s death of the prominent leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel led to a lot of violence in Mexico. School was cancelled in numerous states, and both local and international governments told their residents to stay home.
Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, also known as “El Mencho,” was the head of one of Mexico’s fastest-growing criminal networks. It was infamous for smuggling fentanyl, methamphetamine, and cocaine into the United States and attacking government agents who tried to stop it.
The Mexican military tried to catch him in his home state of Jalisco, but he was shot and killed. Members of the cartel reacted violently all around the country, blocking roads and setting cars on fire.
President Claudia Sheinbaum asked people to stay calm, and authorities said late on Sunday that they had cleared most of the more than 250 cartel roadblocks in 20 states. The White House said that the US helped with intelligence for the operation to catch the cartel head and praised Mexico’s army for taking down a man who was one of the most wanted criminals in both countries.
