After Weeks of Dry Taps, Johannesburg Residents Protest

After over a month with dry taps, Johannesburg citizens are furious and have taken to the streets to demand immediate action from city officials. Some houses have reported little to no water since December, according to protesters, who claim the water supply has been erratic for weeks. Westdene, Melville, and Sophiatown are some of the most severely affected suburbs.

Others claim that they continue to pay for services that they never receive. Marilise Scheppers remarked, “I pay for my services, but I’m not getting service.” “It’s like buying bread and milk at a café and then leaving without them when you get home.

Mayor Dada Morero stated that officials are collaborating with communities to stabilise supply and prevent a “Day Zero” situation in the face of growing ire. “We are trying to push and balance the water distribution, but some areas will struggle,” he stated.

To access emergency funding, technical assistance, and resources needed to restore the city’s deteriorating, overburdened water infrastructure, protesters are now demanding that the problem be classified as a national disaster.
