Ethiopia: As Tensions Rise, Flights From the Capital to Tigray are Canceled
Passenger flights between Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa, and cities in the northern Tigray region have been suspended amid growing concerns about a possible return to conflict. Ethiopian Airlines said the cancellations were due to “unplanned circumstances”, but has not issued any further explanation so far.
The move comes at a tense moment, with a peace agreement signed four years ago now under strain. Disputes over territory have intensified as the country heads towards elections scheduled for this summer.
Reports suggest clashes have broken out between federal government forces and Tigray fighters in western Tigray. There are also claims of fresh military deployments in the southern part of the region. Tigray continues to be a major point of contention. The Ethiopian government says it plans to settle the territorial dispute through a referendum.
However, the situation on the ground remains complicated. Around one million people were displaced during the conflict and are currently living in temporary camps. It is still uncertain whether they will be able to take part in the upcoming vote.
