Israel Consents to The Limited Reopening” of The Rafah Crossing Between Gaza and Egypt

Israel has said it will allow a limited reopening of the Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt as part of former US President Donald Trump’s peace plan. According to a statement from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office on Sunday night, the crossing will be opened only for pedestrian movement and will operate under full Israeli inspection. Rafah is a crucial route for humanitarian aid into Gaza and has been largely closed since May 2024.

Humanitarian groups and the United Nations have repeatedly called for the crossing to reopen, especially after a ceasefire in Gaza took effect on October 10. However, Israeli authorities had continued to oppose the move, saying any reopening depended on the return of all hostages, both living and deceased.

On Monday, Israel announced it had recovered the remains of the last hostage held in Gaza. The body was identified as Ran Gvili, an Israeli police officer.

Prime Minister Netanyahu described the recovery as a major achievement for Israel and its military. The United Nations welcomed the return of the final Israeli captive and renewed its call for the full implementation of the Gaza ceasefire agreement.
