Mixed Reactions in Lagos After US Strikes in Northwestern Nigeria
Residents of Lagos, which is far from the unstable north, reacted to the US’s decision to conduct strikes against an IS group in northwest Nigeria with a variety of emotions. Why shouldn’t we support a foreign nation that wants to bring stability or peace to Nigeria? Reverend Emmanuel Udoh stood next to a cab stand and remarked.
Dominic Dioju, a native of Lagos, expressed similar opinions, referring to the strike as a welcome development. After criticizing the government of the West African nation of failing to stop the persecution of Christians for weeks, President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that the United States has launched a “powerful and deadly” strike against Islamic State fighters.
There isn’t a religious crisis in Nigeria right now. He stated, “It is a problem of personal kidnapping and bandits, other groups, trying to destroy the country itself,” adding that Nigeria is capable of managing this problem on its own.
Human rights attorney and conflict analyst Bulama Bukarti warned that the Nigerian government risks losing support if they are unable to verify whether these strikes, which were carried out with their assistance, were successful.
According to the scant information now available, there have been strikes in two areas, affecting hotels in one and an onion farm in another, but neither the US nor Nigeria has offered any proof that they occurred.
