The Benin Government Claims That Both Sides Suffered Casualties During the Brief Attempt
For the first time since Sunday’s attempted coup, Benin President Patrice Talon met with cabinet officials on Monday night. The government acknowledged that Nigerian fighter jets’ airstrikes prevented mutinous soldiers from attempting to overthrow the president. It claimed that both government forces and the rebellious troops suffered fatalities in the brief coup.
In an effort to help reestablish order, Abuja had already acknowledged sending ground troops and aircraft to its far smaller neighbor. Nigeria and Benin are both members of ECOWAS, the Economic Community of West African States.
According to political consultant Morgan Metondji Assogba, ECOWAS would have been eager to intervene to stop a coup in Benin. The current connection between Benin and ECOWAS enables the latter to support stability while, of course, upholding the idea of sovereignty, he said. This is particularly true in light of the several recent coups in the West African region, Assogba continued.
