Ouattara, The Current Leader of Ivory Coast, Takes the Oath of Office for a Fourth Term

Ivory Coast President Alassane Ouattara took office on Monday morning for a fourth five-year term after an election in October that was characterized by low voter turnout and a crackdown on dissent.

Several regional heads of state, including those from Mauritania, Liberia, the Gambia, Ghana, Senegal, and Gabon, attended the inauguration. Ouattara repeatedly bragged about the advancements the nation has made since he assumed office in late 2010.

Ivorians demonstrated their sovereign choice on Saturday, October 25. They reiterated their dedication to democracy, stability, and peace, for which significant work has been done since 2011, he said.

Our sub-regional environment remains fragile,” he added, alluding to regional turmoil. Terrorist dangers are still present, evolving, and becoming more digital. The 83-year-old Ouattara initially gained power in late 2010 after defeating Laurent Gbagbo in a contentious election. Before an internationally backed Ouattara, supported by French and U.N. soldiers, came to power, at least 3,000 people had died in the deadly turmoil following that election.

Since then, his detractors have accused him of strengthening his hold on power, while his admirers have praised him for reviving the economy of the world’s biggest cocoa producer, which had been devastated by the conflict.
