Guinea-Bissau Gradually Returns to Normalcy as Restrictions Ease

Residents of Bissau woke up on Friday to the news of a new Prime Minister’s appointment. Ilidio Vieira Té, who previously served as Minister of Finance, has been chosen for the role and will continue overseeing the finance portfolio for the next 12 months.

As restrictions were lifted, the capital saw a relatively calm atmosphere. Both public and private transport resumed operations, with taxis and motorcycle taxis back on the roads. Markets reopened, though vendors reported fewer customers than usual. Hospitals, health centers, and schools are functioning, while other public institutions remain closed due to lingering uncertainty.

Government offices are operating, alongside some private institutions, albeit with limited staff. Fuel stations are open and serving motorists as usual.

The political situation in Guinea-Bissau remains tense following a disputed presidential election that quickly led to a controversial coup. Opposition figures have questioned the legitimacy of the new leadership and criticized the removal of former president Umaro Sissoco Embaló. One of the world’s poorest nations, Guinea-Bissau continues to struggle with chronic political instability, repeated coups, and fragile democratic institutions, a reflection of decades of unrest and unfulfilled reforms.
