Parents of Children Abducted in Nigeria are Still Waiting in Agony for Updates

Parents of children abducted from a school in Nigeria’s northern Niger state last week gathered on Friday to provide more details to authorities. Gunmen had stormed St. Mary’s School in Papiri the previous Friday, kidnapping 303 students and 12 teachers. Since then, about 50 students have escaped, while security forces, supported by local hunters, are working to rescue the others still held captive.

Among the missing is the 7-year-old son of Joseph Dimas. He was asked by school officials to come forward and verify information about his family. Authorities need our attestation to confirm how many children we have. That’s why we came here to give our children’s names and our location,” Dimas explained.

Nigeria continues to face escalating insecurity as armed groups operate across remote areas with little government control. The situation has worsened with militant factions from the Sahel joining Boko Haram fighters in northern Nigeria. Just days before the Papiri abduction, 25 girls were also kidnapped in the neighboring Kebbi state. Experts note that criminal groups often target schools to pressure the government into paying ransoms. No group has yet claimed responsibility for either attack.
