Officers Are Fired by Mali’s Transitional Government after a Failed Coup Attempt

According to a presidential order released on Wednesday, General Assimi Goïta, Mali’s transitional leader, has officially fired a dozen senior military officers for their suspected roles in an unsuccessful August coup attempt.

Several top officers were fired from the military and security forces as a disciplinary penalty, according to the October 7 decree. They include several lieutenant colonels and captains, as well as two brigadier generals, Abass Dembélé and Nema Sagara.

Directly connected to a “subversive act” on August 1, 2025, were the dismissed individuals. The Security and Civil Protection Minister, Major General Daoud Aly Mohammedine, had earlier said on television that the plot was “successfully thwarted by specialized services.

The administration has reassured the public that legal investigations are being conducted to find any possible collaborators. Authorities also implicated a foreign national in the plot, which was a significant disclosure. According to the ruling, French national Yann Christian Bernard Vizilier “actively participated in the foiled operation.
