UNESCO Poised for Historic Leadership Change

Khaled el-Anani, Egypt’s former Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, was nominated by UNESCO’s Executive Board on Monday, marking the organization’s first-ever Arab Director-General. El-Anani, 54, will assume leadership of an organization confronting significant political and financial obstacles, such as the recent U.S. withdrawal and widening international rifts over the wars in Gaza and Ukraine, if the General Conference in November confirms his appointment.

El-Anani promised to serve all countries equitably in his remarks following his nomination. He also promised leadership that would increase UNESCO’s position in education, research, culture, communication, and information all of which are regarded as “global public goods.

El-Anani was a famous Egyptologist who handled tourism revival efforts and important cultural projects like the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization. Cultural preservation, educational equity, and reestablishing international cooperation—including attempts to reintegrate the United States into UNESCO are anticipated to be among his top priorities.
