Julius Maada Bio, the Newly Appointed President of ECOWAS, Reiterates his Desire for Sahel States to Rejoin the Group

Julius Maada Bio, the president of Sierra Leone, has reaffirmed his desire for the Alliance of Sahel States to re-join the regional organization ECOWAS as he continues his tour of West Africa. Maada Bio, who assumed the Economic Community of West African States’ rotating leadership in June, says he expects his positive ties with Burkina Faso, Niger, and Mali would help him.

After forming their own alliance last year, the three junta-led nations formally declared their departure from the 15-nation bloc in January. They split up after ECOWAS called for Niger to return to democratic governance following its military takeover in 2023.

Given the escalating dangers of poverty, military takeovers, climate change, and terrorism in the area, the West African bloc is at a turning point. Maada Bio has emphasized how crucial it is to keep the area united while addressing these issues. During his term, he has promised to put democracy, security cooperation, economic integration, and institutional credibility first.
