Ethiopian Rights Leaders Issue Warnings After the US Freezes Aid

Ethiopian human rights organisations are speaking out in response to the widespread alarm caused by US President Donald Trump’s ban on international help. Many civil society and humanitarian organisations may have to suspend their vital activities as a result of this circumstance, according to Masud Gebeyehu Reta, Executive Director of the Ethiopian Human Rights Organisations and a member of the Ethiopian Civil Society Organisations.
As a direct result of the 90-day aid restriction imposed by the Trump administration, the Ethiopian Ministry of Health has announced preparations to fire more than 5,000 contractual health personnel. Reta responded forcefully, emphasising that Trump should not sabotage the American people’s generosity to those in need worldwide.
“The people own this funding and it is meant for them. It illustrates how Americans decide to help communities around the world as a part of our common humanity. “The people want to help those who are suffering from disease, conflict, climate change, and more, and the executive has no right to dictate this,” he said. Even while several European countries devote a larger portion of their resources to such initiatives, the United States continues to be the world’s top donor of foreign aid. With a focus on preventing epidemics, educating children, providing access to clean water, and supporting numerous development projects, USAID works in almost 120 countries.
